Pileated Woodpecker

The pileated woodpecker is the large black and white bird that looks like a dinosaur. I recently ran across a tree with a large carved out space I haven't seen before. After searching online, images mostly, I discover the work is done by a pilieated woodpecker. A bird was not my first thought. There is quite a chunk of old tree missing.

The space is about twelve feet off the ground.
Good place for a nest.

    1. Hello Katherine,
The loudest knocking sound in the woods is usually a pileated woodpecker. They do look ancient. The male has red feathers on top.
