Champlain Valley Wind

A new favorite tree, this oak is along Route 17 at the Dead Creek Wildlife Refuge visitor's area in Addison, Vermont. I like the entire group lining the road, but his one stands out as a watercolor waiting (for minimal artistic pruning).

As you can see in the background, the foliage at this elevation is puckering up to the very edge of peak.

Looking towards the north with the Adirondacks in the distance

It takes years of wind to shape a tree that way.

Out of frame on the left are the fields where the Canada and Snow Geese land in numbers later in October when the field is planted in corn. They can also be seen across the street. I expect from the small flock I saw yesterday, the geese will begin arriving this week.
